A Clint Dempsey hat-trick plus a fourth from Damien Duff saw Fulham get past their London neighbours and into the draw for the fourth round.

Martin Jol fielded a full strength side, with Chris Powell doing likewise. Sullivan came in for the suspended Hamer, Taylor returned to partner Morrison at the heart of the defence and the energy of Pritchard was again used in tandem with Hollands.

Jol’s side got off to the perfect start when Murphy’s pass was deflected invitingly into the path of Dempsey who just had to prod the ball wide of Sullivan.

Fulham had earlier cleared a Hollands effort from a Jackson corner off the line. Stockdale was called into action and had to make a smart stop with his feet to prevent Wright-Phillips levelling. However, the goal enabled the Cottagers to play within themselves and you sensed they could go up a gear if necessary.

The speed of thought, passing, first touch and finishing are just better at Premiership level.

The Addicks were brave and enjoyed their best spell of the game at the start of the second period. They pressed their hosts back and needed to make their pressure pay to sow doubts in Fulham’s mind. The best chance fell to Wright-Phillips but he was foiled by Stockdale in the home goal. Frei was replaced by Damien Duff on the right before the hour mark. Jol probably made the move to prevent Wiggins’ rampaging runs.

Dempsey clipped in the second then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Sullivan brought down Ruiz. Damien Duff added the fourth to give the scoreline a convincing look.

The result was, in many ways, similar to Halifax with the losers feeling the score did not do them justice.

Wiggins and Kermorgant in particular will feel they they acquitted themselves well against higher class opponents.

Powell can be proud of the spirit and performance his team put in, and if they replicate it at Hillsborough next Saturday, they should return home with three points.
